One of the most famous battles of the sexes, The Taming of the Shrew is bawdy, funny, and horribly anti-feminist. Twenty years after Shakespeare set wife-tamer Petruchio loose in Padua, John Fletcher (who collaborated on three plays with the Bard and succeeded him as house playwright for the King’s Men) wrote his response in The Woman’s Prize, or the Tamer Tamed, where Petruchio gets his comeuppance from his second wife. Far more popular than Shakespeare’s play in its time, The Tamer Tamed resets the gender balances (with a little help from Aristophanes’ Lysistrata!).
